چکیده

FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) systems present interesting challenges in system evolution. On one hand, most FOSS systems are based on very fine-grained units of software deployment—called packages—which promote system evolution; on the other hand, FOSS systems are among the largest software systems known and require sophisticated static and dynamic conditions to be verified, in order to successfully deploy upgrades on user machines. The slightest error in one of these conditions can turn a routine upgrade into a system administrator nightmare. In this paper we introduce a model-based approach to support the upgrade of FOSS systems. The approach promotes the simulation of upgrades to predict failures before affecting the real system. Both fine-grained static aspects (e.g. configuration incoherences) and dynamic aspects (e.g. the execution of configuration scripts) are taken into account, improving over the state of the art of upgrade planners. The effectiveness of the approach is validated by instantiating the approach to widely-used FOSS distributions.

Free and Open Source Geospatial Tools for Environ- mental Modeling and Management

Geospatial software tools (GIS) are used for creating, viewing, managing, analyzing, and utilizing geospatial data. Geospatial data can include socio-economic, environmental, geophysical, and technical data about the Earth and societal infrastructure and it is pivotal in environmental modeling and management (EMM). Desktop, web-based, and embedded geospatial tools and systems have become an ess...

License Compliance Issues in Free and Open Source Software

Today, Free and open source software (FOSS) is widely used by organizations and individuals and viewed as a new approach to developing software. New software can be developed by integrating FOSS components or incorporating source code fragments, thus adding value in terms of functionality and quality. The use of FOSS components in developing new software requires developers to comply with the t...

Supporting Software Evolution in a Distributed, Persistent System

Current enterprise infrastructures based on CORBA have to rely on ad-hoc mechanisms for system software evolution. The CORBA services speci cations do not address the problems associated with evolving modern software systems, leaving the programmer to manage the complexity. The DRASTIC system provides a run-time environment in which the evolution of software is directly supported. With referenc...

Free/Open Source Software Development: Recent Research Results and Methods

Abstract The focus of this chapter is to review what is known about free and open source software development (FOSSD) work practices, development processes, project and community dynamics, and other socio-technical relationships. It does not focus on specific properties or technical attributes of different FOSS systems, but it does seek to explore how FOSS is developed and evolved. The chapter ...
